How to Make a Saloon Girl Skirt
- 1). Measure your waist, divide this measurement in half, then add an additional three inches. For instance, for a 30-inch waist, each panel will be 15 inches for your waist and an additional 3 inches for seam allowance, for a total of 18 inches. Use the tape measure to measure this length on the top center of each panel, then mark them with the chalk pencil.
- 2). Measure out how long you want your skirt by using the tape measure and measuring down from your waist. Add two inches for the the drawstring area and two more inches for the hem before marking the length with the chalk pencil.
- 3). Draw a diagonal line from the top measurements to the bottom of the fabric so the bottom hem is approximately 3 to 4 inches longer on both sides of each panel. Cut along the line to create two triangular shaped panels.
- 4). Pin one long edge of each of the two panels together so the two are connected. Sew the two panels together, using a 5/8-inch seam allowance.
- 5). Create space for the drawstring, also known as the drawstring casing, by turning over 1 inch of fabric and pinning it in place. Sew it down close to the unfinished edge to make the drawstring casing, leaving 1 inch open at the middle of the skirt.
- 6). Hem the skirt. Fold up the edge of the skirt 1/2 inch, then turn up an additional 1/2 inch. Pin it, then sew it.
- 7). Pin the other long edge of the skirt together. Sew up the length of the skirt, but do not sew together the drawstring casing, so you can put in the drawstring.
- 8). Cut a portion of elegant ribbon about 2 feet longer than the length of your waist. Attach a safety pin at one end of the ribbon to guide it through the casing.
- 9). Line the inside of the skirt with layers of ruffles. Use fabric glue or hot glue to adhere rows of ruffles, giving the skirt more pouf and adding some saloon girl style.
- 10
Decorate the skirt by hot gluing lace and ruffles to the front and the back. Adhere some feathers to the top back of the skirt with hot glue to form a faux bustle.
