How to Use What You Have to Decorate the Bedroom

    • 1). Coordinate your bedroom furniture with paint left over from previous projects. Interior wall, exterior house, spray paint and acrylic craft paints provide good, durable coverage on furniture. Lightly sand the furniture to give the surface a tooth that will allow the paint to adhere. Apply as many coats as necessary for complete coverage. Arrange the furniture in the room.

    • 2). Pull your old suitcases out of the closet. Stack them up to create bedside tables or use them wherever a small table may be needed. Recycle an old toy chest for extra storage and seating at the end of your bed. Sand and paint the chest for an instant blanket trunk.

    • 3). Dress the bed. Bed coverings and pillows will help create the style you want your room to reflect. Use bedspreads, comforters or quilts for the cover. Sheets, tablecloths and fabric shower curtains are additional options for bedspreads. If the design on the fabric, or the color, is not to your liking, consider flipping them over. Many coverings have a different color or fabric design on the wrong side.

    • 4). Sew two squares of recycled fabric together to form a pillow. Use old clothes or linens for the pillow fabric. Fill the cases with stuffing from old pillows. If the structure and shape of the old pillows is still usable, simply cover the existing pillows with fabric. Trace the pillow shapes and add a 1/2 inch for a seam allowance. Sew the pillow shapes together, leaving an opening on one edge. Insert the old pillow and sew the opening closed.

    • 5). Dress the windows. Curtains left over from other rooms or shower curtains can be used, but if the color or style does not match the theme or style you are creating, make your own curtains using sheets, tablecloths or old dresses. Measure the width of your window and add 1 inch. Measure the length from above the window frame to the desired length of your curtains and add 3 inches. Cut two curtain panels for each window using these measurements. Sew a 1/4-inch hem along the side edges and the bottom. Sew a 1-inch rod pocket along the top edge.

    • 6). Drape scarves, hankies, bandannas, place mats or doilies over the top of the curtain to create a valance. Curtain tiebacks can be necklaces, belts, twine or fabric.

    • 7). Gather all of your unused picture frames. Remove the glass and the pictures. Spray paint all the frames in one coordinating color. Put the frames back together, adding art of your choice. If you have no art or appropriate photos, cut decorative paper or fabric and insert in the frames. Old windows can be substituted for picture frames.

    • 8). Make room accessories using ordinary items from around your home. Spray paint knickknacks with one coordinating color and wrap books with decorative paper, newspaper, maps or wallpaper.
