How to Make a Compass With a Magnet and Paper Clip
- 1). Magnetize one end of the paper clip by rubbing one end of the magnet on it. Like the Earth, a magnet also holds magnetic energy. By rubbing it on a paper clip, you can transfer that energy to the clip. The type of energy transferred depends on which end of the magnet you rub on it.
- 2). Place the paper clip on the bowl of water. Perform this slowly and carefully so that it floats on the water. Wait 15 seconds for the paper clip to rotate and then stop at a direction. The direction should be either north or south, depending on the way in which you magnetized it. If the clip sinks or does not rotate, then try first putting it inside a straw.
- 3). Rotate the bowl different directions and watch how the needle reacts. Every time you rotate the bowl, the needle should rotate back to its original position by itself -- as in without any visible assistance.
