How to Say I'm Not Interested When Dating

    • 1). Be calm and level-headed. Don't have this conversation when you feel particularly upset or agitated, and if possible avoid having it just after an argument. Otherwise this may cause the other person to think that you don't really mean what you say, and assume that it'll be possible to make amends after you've settled down. Additionally, being calm and collected should help emphasize that you've thought about your decision and haven't made it on a whim.

    • 2). Be direct and honest. Avoid phrases like "I'm just not sure about ..." , of "Sometimes I feel ...", or "I don't know what to say ...". You need to drive the conversation, and let it be known that you've come to a direct and definite conclusion. Acting unsure or uncertain will just make the other person feel that you need extra convincing, or may make them unsure of what your feelings are. It may be a cliche, but this conversation can be compared to pulling off a band-aid - it's best down fast to avoid unnecessary pain.

    • 3). Use humor to lighten the situation if appropriate. Although this may sound strange initially, using a little well-placed humor can help demonstrate that you still have a sense of respect for the person, and that you don't consider them to be below you in status. For example, saying "And let's face it, our haircuts clearly don't match properly" while smiling and winking. The goal is to share a small laugh between you two in order to demonstrate that there's no remaining hard feelings. However, if it feels like the other person wouldn't appreciate a friendly joke, avoid it.

    • 4). Don't feel guilty or get into an argument - stay calm and consistent. Breakups are a part of life, and an important element of finding a compatible partner. Having the confidence to tell the person you're dating that you're not interested in perusing a longer relationship with them will ultimately save you both time. Also, it's unlikely that the other person would appreciate not being told when you feel unhappy.
