    • 1). Remove everything from your bedroom that doesn't belong there. Return papers, children's toys, clothing and anything else that belongs somewhere else to their proper places.

    • 2). Determine a color scheme that you like and find calming. Generally speaking, soft and neutral hues make a room more tranquil than brighter colors you may also enjoy. Introduce other colors as complementary, in small doses, in accessories. Paint your bedroom walls the base color you've decided to use such as light sage green, gray-blue, beige or ivory.

    • 3). Take stock of your bedroom furniture and choose the best placement for each piece. Your room shouldn't be overstuffed with furniture, so leave room for open space. An overcrowded room may induce sensory overload rather than allowing your mind, and in turn your body, to relax. Place your bed first, then night tables, dresser or chest and other pieces such as a bench or chair.

    • 4). Make your bed with bedding that complements the color scheme you chose. The comforter or duvet can be a light neutral tone or incorporate the bold or louder color in the design. Incorporate texture and color through smaller, decorative pillows. Another option is to use white or ivory bedding and add a colorful throw on the foot of the bed.

    • 5). Decorate your master bedroom with accessories that complete your relaxing, tranquil space. A rug at the foot of your bed and draperies or curtains should complement your room. Artwork and lamps should coordinate with the color scheme and be large enough to be noticed without dwarfing your furniture or other elements.
