How to Build a Round Pond

    • 1). Cut a length of rope to approximately one-half of the pond's diameter. Tie one of the rope's ends to a piece of rebar and hammer the rebar into the ground at the pond's center point.

    • 2). Tie the rope's other end around a spray paint can. Pull the rope taught. Walk around the rebar while spraying paint onto the ground to draw a circle.

    • 3). Dig out the area inside the spray paint to approximately 12 inches deep. Lay a level around the round pond's edges to check that the dug out area slopes just slightly toward the round pond's center. This level will be the pond's shelf and should be approximately 1 foot wide.

    • 4). Dig out the round pond's center to a depth of 3 to 5 feet. The depth depends on what you plan to put in the pond. Koi require a depth of 5 feet while aquatic plants do fine with a 3 foot depth.

    • 5). Unfold a rubber pond liner over the round pond and lower it down until it rests about 3 inches above the pond's deepest level. Smooth as many wrinkles as possible out of the liner. Set bricks around the liner's edges to hold it in place. Begin filling the liner with water. Allow the liner to stretch down and over the pond's shelf as it fills with water.

    • 6). Lift the bricks off the liner. Cut the extra liner off at ground level with a scissors.
