Video: How to Germinate Morning Glory Seeds
Video Transcript
Hi. I'm Rebecca Winn, and I'm a horticulturist and landscape designer. I own Whimsical Gardens, an artistic landscape design company. And today I'm going to talk to you about how to germinate morning glory seeds. Morning glories are a beautiful old fashioned summer flowering vine that are really very easy to grow. But sometimes they can be a little tricky to get started. So I'm going to give you a few pointers on how to get morning glory seeds to germinate. The first way is to very simply soak the seeds in a shallow dish of water. Sometimes that's enough to soften them enough to sprout. If that doesn't work then you can use a 50/50 percent solution, half water and half hydrogen peroxide. That can help weaken the seed coat enough to help the seeds sprout. The third way is to actually nick the seed. Now this is the riskiest way so do be careful if you decide to try this. Wear gloves and use a knife that's sharp enough to nick the seed easily. The seeds are also very small so be careful. Remember that morning glory seeds germinate between 59 and 90 degrees. So if you're having trouble getting your seeds to germinate, it may be that it's too cool outside or it might be that it's too hot. Once the seeds germinate, it won't be long before you see beautiful little heart shaped leaves that are indicative of morning glories. And before long they'll cover your fence with gorgeous beautiful flowers. And in future years with many varieties they'll reseed naturally in that location and you'll even have enough to share seeds with your friends. I'm Rebecca Winn and this has been how to germinate morning glories.
