Ideas for Teaching Three-Year-Olds the ABCs
- Create an alphabet book to help teach the alphabet to a three-year-old. Write each letter of the alphabet on a sheet of construction paper. Punch holes along one side of the papers and tie together using yarn. Introduce a letter at a time in alphabetical order to your child. Flip through old magazines with your three-year-old and ask her if she sees the letter anywhere on the page. You may have to point out a few first to help her along. Cut out out the letters you find and glue the letters to the page. Review name and sound of the letter a few times before moving on to the next letter. Continue until you have an entire book to flip through with your three-year-old.
- Create food fun that also helps your preschooler learn the alphabet. Serve alphabet soup for lunch or dinner and use the letters to teach the three-year old the alphabet. Start with pointing out one or two letters. Say the name and the sounds letters make for your three-year-old. Ask him to repeat it back to you. Focusing on one or two letters at a time instead of the entire alphabet will allow him enough time to begin to grasp the name and sounds. You can also use letter cookie cutters to make alphabet cookies. Bake a batch of only a few letters at a time to teach your child. As you enjoy the cookies, say the name and sounds of the letters for your child. Ask him to repeat the name or sound back to you.
- Write letters on index cards to create an alphabet concentration game. You will need two copies of each letter to play the game. Select six or seven pairs of letters and shuffle them. Arrange them in rows with in reach of you and your three-year-old. Take turns flipping two cards over at a time. When a matching pair is flipped over, the player keeps the card. If the cards do not match, flip them back over. Another matching game can be played using a clothesline. Create a clothesline by tying rope between two chairs. The clothesline should be high enough for your child to reach. Then, on construction paper, write out three or four letters that your three-year-old is familiar with. Write matching letters on the clothespin. Have your child match the letter on the construction paper to the clothespin. She may need your help to work the clothespin.
- Teach three-year-olds the alphabet through song. This song is sung to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It." For each letter have students make the letter's sound. Not only will it teach him the alphabet, but also the sounds that correspond to each letter.
If you're happy and you know it
Bounce around, B B
If you're happy and you know it,
Bounce around, B B
If you're happy and you know it,
Then your face will truly show it,
If you're happy and you know it,
Bounce around, B B
The the rest of the letters select an action that starts with the same letter. For example, for C the toddler can clap his hands. D can have him dance around. Continue in this matter until you have reached the end of the alphabet.
