How to Include Your Children in a Family Food Storage Plan

    • 1). Maintain a food journal of your child's eating habits for one week. Record the types and quantities of food and beverages your child consumes so you can calculate how much food you need to store for your child to eat well.

    • 2). Ask your children to make a list of their favorite foods. Your child can feel involved in the planning process. While you may not be able to store all of your child's favorite treats, you may be able to find dehydrated fruits and desserts that your child loves.

    • 3). Purchase dried, dehydrated and canned foods for your storage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend storing at least 1 gallon of water per person per day, but store extra water and powdered milk for children. Also consider special dietary requirements for infants, such as pureed baby food and powdered formula.

    • 4). Allow your children to help you organize your food items. Whether you store food in a closet pantry, kitchen cupboards or a large box, your children can enjoy feeling important enough to help.

    • 5). Rotate stored foods on a regular basis. While many foods can last decades when stored properly, other foods have expiration dates. Inspect foods weekly to check expiration dates. Allow your children to help you check the foods. Also examine foods to make sure they are free from pests or other physical damage.
