Christmas Decorations - Setting the Mood for a Very Merry Christmas

It is a special feeling when the time comes to start putting up the Christmas decorations each year. Often the family outing to go and buy the perfect tree has become a ritual which marks the start of the festive season.

Some people prefer to use vintage Christmas decorations, often family favourites which are used year after year, whilst others opt for modern baubles and lights that are used for only one season and then handed in to the local charity shop. Whatever your preference, Christmas isn't Christmas without the decorations.

Christmas tree decorations can mean high-tech lights, real candles or homemade strings of fragrant orange slices. Then place beautifully wrapped gifts at the base of the tree to add to the festive feeling. Don't forget the presents don't even have to be real gifts if you have a houseful of curious children (and adults) who cannot be trusted not to pry and peek. Gift-wrap empty boxes and decorate them with stylish ribbons before putting them around the tree for effect.

For some people decorations are part of a festive theme, such as a colour or style which runs through all aspects of Christmas. For example, you may decide that you are going to have a silver-themed Christmas this year and all decorations and table settings will be colour co-ordinated.

Christmas decorations can be as individual as you are. There are no rights or wrongs. Your Christmas should suit your home and your family - you only have yourselves to please.

Christmas table decorations add to the atmosphere and set off the Christmas food and drink to good effect. If you decide to use candles as part of your table decorations, make sure they are surrounded by non-flammable decorations and never leave the candles unattended. Christmas dinner by candlelight makes it a really special occasion - however, one not necessarily recommended if you have young children!. You can make your own table decorations using winter greenery from your garden or from bits you collect from the local countryside. Add some coloured ribbons and tinsel and you have fresh, seasonal decorations - they do not have to be complicated or expensive.

External Christmas lights and free standing decorations in the garden have become ever more popular with many neighbours competing to outdo each other in the size and extravagance of their displays. Some people now use these larger outdoor displays to raise money for charity which is a good idea and in line with the traditional meaning of the season.

You can also use the Christmas Cards you receive to decorate your home at no additional cost. You can arrange them artistically around your doorframes, along ceiling beams or simply on the walls to add to the Christmas feel. You can buy specially designed Christmas card holders but it is as easy to use a little thought and make your own out of ribbon.

Christmas decorations are an essential part of a traditional Christmas and the effort it takes to put them up is woth it for the joy them bring. Don't forget however, the old superstition that says they must be taken down by the end of Twelfth Night (6th January) and packed away for another year.
