How to Make Cute Origami Animals Out of Rectangular Paper
- 1). Cut or find a rectangular piece of paper with a width-to-length ratio of 3 to 7. For example, this can be a piece of paper that is 3 inches wide and 7 inches long. A United States dollar bill is the appropriate size for this origami project.
- 2). Place the rectangular paper on a flat surface, with its long sides turned horizontally.
- 3). Move the left edge of the paper across to match up with the right edge. Fold and unfold the paper to make a vertical crease down the center.
- 4). Fold the top right edge of the paper downward so that it lines up evenly with the center crease. Fold the bottom left edge upward so that it lines up with the center line. Flip over the paper.
- 5). Make a small fold by moving the bottom left corner upward until the left edge meets with the nearest horizontal line. Move the top right corner downward until the right edge lines up with the nearest horizontal line.
- 6). Fold the bottom edge upward and make a crease where it meets with the nearest horizontal line. Unfold the crease and tuck this flap underneath the top-most piece of the paper. Repeat the process with the top right edge by folding it downward over the horizontal line and then tucking it underneath. The paper will now be shaped similarly to a sideways kite.
- 7). Fold the top right corner to the left until the paper folds in the pre-made center crease.
- 8). Move the top edge downward to line up with the bottom edge. Fold it in place and unfold to create a horizontal crease in the center.
- 9). Fold the bottom left corner upward and to the right until the bottom edge meets with the far right edge. Fold it in place and unfold it. Fold the top left corner downward and to the right until the top edge meets the far right edge. Fold it in place and unfold it.

Flip over the paper. Pick up the paper in your hands. Press downward on the center horizontal fold. Turn the page 90 degrees to the left and place it on the table. The butterfly will now be able to sit on a flat surface with its wings extended in the air.
