Don't worry if you can't enjoy your garden during the day. There are certain flowers that turn nighttime into show time. Like the name says, evening blooming flowers only open themselves up when the sun goes down. To add to the unusual visual experience, these flowers often emit pleasant aromas. Plant your own moon garden with these flowers and you'll enjoy your green space in an entirely new way. - The evening primrose is like a garden Cinderella. With its almost hairy-like appearance, it looks like a raggedy weed during the day. But when night descends like a fairy godmother, its petals slowly expand, revealing a sunny yellow bloom. The flower's pleasant aroma attracts the sphinx moth, which aids in pollination.
- You could easily walk past this member of the cactus family without giving it a second look. During most of the year the night blooming cereus looks like a dead bush. But for one night each June or July it opens up to reveal its fragrant, white trumpet-like flowers. In that brief time its petals can expand anywhere from 4 to 8 inches. But at the first hint of sunlight, the flowers of the night blooming cereus close and aren't seen until the following year.
- The moonflower is a perennial vine that grows quickly in tropical areas. In northern states it's considered an annual plant. The flower begins to unfurl its white, almost heart-shaped flowers in the late afternoon. They shrivel as morning approaches, but that's not the end of the spectacle. The moonflower has many buds that continue to bloom during the warm weather.
- Contrary to its name, the four-o'clock doesn't necessarily have a timer that launches the blooming process at the same time every day. It's actually the change in temperature that transforms this bush plant into a fragrant flowering delight. As an added bonus, four-o'clocks tend to attract butterflies and hummingbirds who feed from its nectar. But if you have children or animals in the vicinity, be careful. The seeds of the four-o'clock are extremely poisonous.
