    • 1). Click "Start" and "Run." Go to the "Search" prompt. Type "Update" into the search box and click "Search."

    • 2). Choose "Windows Update" from the list of results. Click "Change Settings" and look under "Important Updates." Choose "Install updates automatically," "Download updates but let me choose," "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install" or "Never check for updates."

    • 3). Schedule your automatic updates if you chose one of the first three settings. Select the time and day you want updates to occur.

    • 4). Under "Recommended updates," check "Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates." This allows Windows to give you recommended updates based on your operating system and computer settings.

    • 5). Choose "Allow all users to install updates on this computer" if you want everyone who uses the computer to have access to choosing updates. This only applies to software that installs automatically on your computer. Windows will still install automatic updates regardless of this setting.

    • 6). Click "OK" when you are satisfied with your changes. If you have an administrator password, enter it in or provide confirmation.
