How to Kill & Rid Himalayan Blackberry Vines
- 1). Remove seedlings from the ground as soon as they sprout. Grab the seedling as close to the ground as possible and pull up, causing removal of the entire seedling, including the root. Use a hoe to expose remaining seeds to the sun, causing them to dry out. Younger plants are less likely to be able to recover from damage than the large plants. Start with small areas and then move to larger infested areas.
- 2). Cut all vines that are growing above the ground. Use a hoe to tackle small areas of growth. Mow and weed eat large areas to attempt to keep up with the vines. Saws, axes and clippers should also be used to remove large, hard-to-cut plants. Tackling vines growing above the ground will eventually kill the roots below the ground by taking away the food source and starving them.
- 3). Dig up root crowns after cutting the vines above the ground. Use a claw mattock to loosen the dirt around the root and pull it out of the ground. This will help to make sure all parts of the vine are removed, making it less likely for regrowth.
- 4). Apply an herbicide such as glyphosate to Himalayan blackberry vines right after they are cut. Put the herbicide directly onto the spot where the vine was cut. Use the herbicide when the vine is in full leaf stage for best results.
