Planting Information for Carnation Poppies

    • 1). Choose a location with well drained soil. Carnation poppies do not transplant well because they grow taproots. Taproots are roots which grow downward, they then form a center and more roots sprout from it sideways. For this reason, you should not start your poppies in pots, if your final destination is in your garden, instead, plant them directly into the ground.

    • 2). Spread the seeds sparsely on the ground and use the back of your rake to gently press them into the soil. They need sunlight to germinate, so do not cover them with soil entirely.

    • 3). Spray the seeds with a fine water mist to prevent them from washing away. Until the seeds germinate, you will want to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Carnation poppies are heat tolerant and can handle dry spells.
