What Is a Sieve or Food Mill?
- A food mill is a tool used to grind and puree soft foods through perforated disks using a hand-turned crank.
- Food mills are used for a variety of purposes: mashing potatoes, pureeing vegetables for baby food, or making applesauce, tomato juice or seedless jam. A food mill makes removing skin and seeds easy. For example, apples can be cooked whole--no need to peel or core beforehand--then put through the food mill, making preparation for making applesauce easier.
- A 2 1/2 quart stainless steel food mill will cost anywhere from $30 to $100, depending on how many disks it has. Additional disks contain small, medium and large perforations, allowing for a variety of food textures to be pushed through the sieve.
