How to Dig for Scallops
- 1). Locate areas of sea grass in a cove in shallow water. Search in water that is about 5 to 10 feet deep. Use a drop line to determine the approximate depth if you are not sure.
- 2). Place the dive flag in plain sight to let other boaters know you are diving in the immediate area. Drape the dive flag over the side of your small boat, hoist it if you have a mast or affix it to a stand several feet tall that rises out of the boat.
- 3). Dive into the water using your diving mask and snorkel while carrying your mesh bag. Locate areas of grass as you peer into the water, breathing through your snorkel.
- 4). Dive down to the sea grass and search with your hands to unearth scallops. Once you unearth a few scallops, there are likely more nearby. Search deeper into the grass and by rocks to find more scallops. Place them into your mesh bag. Return to the surface for air as needed.
