How to Make a Dog Sweater Using a Loom

    • 1). Take your dog's measurements. Strech a measuring tape from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Wrap the tape around your dog's chest at the widest point and then also measure the width of your dog's neck.

    • 2). String your loom with warp threads according to your loom's instructions. Check the spacing between warp threads to ensure they are evenly spaced. If you notice warp threads are too far apart or too close together, carefully slide or roll them into place. Lay the first pattern piece on the warp threads and mark the curves and angles of the pattern on the warp threads with a marker. If you are planning an elaborate weave pattern for your dog sweater, draw the pattern on a piece of graph paper to track your stitch placement.

    • 3). Thread the cross-stitch needle with your first color of yarn. Begin weaving in the middle of the warp threads. Start your weave from underneath and pull the length of yarn or thread through until there is only a two inch tail hanging towards to back. Weave to the edge by alternating over and under the warp threads. Start the next row by weaving over and under the opposite warp threads of the previous row. If you change colors, cut the yarn long enough to leave another two inch tail at the back.

    • 4). Reduce the width of your woven piece following the marks on your warp threads to follow the sweater pattern. Finish the woven piece according to the pattern and cut the warp threads at the back of the loom. Knot neighboring warp threads together. Do not pull the warp threads too tight while tying them off; this can ruin the shape of your piece. Cut off the excess warp thread ends. Restring the loom and repeat the process with each pattern piece. Sew the woven pieces together according to your dog sweater pattern with at least a half-inch seam allowance.
