How to Replace an Idler Pulley for a 1996 Ford Explorer
- 1). Open the hood and prop it up securely. Release the serpentine belt tension by rotating the tension pulley counterclockwise using a socket wrench.
- 2). Slide the belt off the idler pulley with your free hand. Slowly release the tension pulley and allow it to return to its original position.
- 3). Remove the center bolt from the idler pulley using a socket wrench. Remove the idler pulley and set it aside.
- 4). Install the new idler pulley by holding it with one hand and using the fingers on your other hand to get the bolt started. Tighten the bolt snugly using a socket wrench.
- 5). Rotate the tension pulley counterclockwise to allow slack in the belt. Use your free hand to slide the belt over the new idler pulley. Make sure the belt is properly seated. Slowly release the tension pulley until the belt is tight. Close the hood.
