    • 1). Lift the Explorer off the ground and support it with jack stands and the floor jack. It will be easier to access the parts with more room under the vehicle.

    • 2). Locate the muffler on the passenger side toward the rear of the vehicle. It will be approximately 13 inches by 19 inches long and rectangular in shape. Remove the hanger from the rubber grommet that holds the muffler to the vehicle by prying the hanger out with the screwdriver. This step is not always necessary.

    • 3). Cut the exhaust tube in front and behind the muffler. You will be able to see where the muffler was welded to the exhaust tubing, and you want to cut on the outside (away from the muffler) of these joints.

    • 4). Insert the new muffler in place, and put a hose clamp over each end. Secure the clamps by tightening them with the socket and ratchet. If new hangers are available, reinsert them into the rubber grommets and make sure the muffler supports itself.

    • 5). Check all the fittings on the clamps, and make sure the muffler is straight and secure.

    • 6). Start the Explorer and listen to the exhaust. Check for leaks.
