How to Winterize Pitcher Plants
- 1). Dig the pitcher plant out of the ground or its container. Take care not to damage its roots or foliage as you dig.
- 2). Wash the soil off the pitcher plant's roots.
- 3). Trim off any dead leaves with a pair of clean, sharp pruning shears.
- 4). Place a 3-inch layer of moistened long-grain sphagnum moss in the bottom of the freezer bag.
- 5). Place the rinsed and trimmed pitcher plant on top of the sphagnum moss so that its roots are covered.
- 6). Dust the pitcher plant with a commercial plant fungicide according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 7). Close the plastic bag, leaving a centimeter open for aeration.
- 8). Place the freezer bag in the refrigerator over the winter, for at least three months. Check the moisture level periodically to make sure the moss doesn't dry out. Respray it with water from a spray bottle if necessary.
- 9). Replant the pitcher plant when the weather warms in spring.
