How to Fix a Regulator on a Dodge Caravan
- 1). Pry off the window control switches from the door with a trim stick and disconnect their electrical connector. If the van uses manual windows, insert a hooked tool into the hole behind the window crank to disengage the clip and remove the handle.
- 2). Disconnect the inner trim panel from the door. Pry off all door handle panels and armrest panels with a trim stick. Remove the mounting screws with a screwdriver then use the trim stick around the panel's edge to release the fasteners. Lift off the panel and disconnect the electrical connectors.
- 3). Peel back the watershield on the door; make sure you don't tear it. Pull the inner molding off of the top of the door.
- 4). Remove the window glass by loosening the two screws holding the glass to the regulator plates--lower the glass so you can access the plates through the access holes--then remove the glass from the lift plates. Remove the weatherstrip from the glass. Insert the front of the glass between the run channel and outer door panel and lift the glass out of the opening at the top of the door.
- 5). Unplug the electrical connector for the window regulator if the van is equipped with power windows.
- 6). Loosen the screws that hold both the front and rear guide rails to the door. These screws are near the corners of the door and usually require a Phillips head screwdriver or a Torx wrench. Remove the screw heads on the rails through the key hole slots in the door panel.
- 7). Lift the regulator up to detach it from the door, slide it rearward and remove it through the door's access hole. Pull the front guide rail out through the front hole and the rear rail through the rear hole.
- 1). Insert the replacement regulator through the access hole in the door. Slide it in place so you can insert the mounting bolts through the key hole slots and attach the bolts. Connect the electrical connector if so equipped.
- 2). Slide the window glass into the door through the slot at the top and bolt it in place on the regulator.
- 3). Reattach the watershield and the inner molding to the door.
- 4). Reconnect the door panel in the reverse order of removal, including reconnecting the window controls, power or manual.
