What Is A Combi Boiler?

These boilers are called "Combi boilers" as they are a combination of a boiler for your central heating and a hot water heater as well.
They enable you to have instant hot water for showers and washing, as well as providing heating for your radiators at the same time.
This makes them ideal for busy family households or Bed and Breakfast houses, where demand for hot water can be very high.
Having no water tank to heat up means that you cannot run out of hot water, which is essential if you have a big family or you are running a B & B business.
With a combi boiler you can preset the water temperature for the radiators and the hot water separately.
You can also get them with very fancy digital timers to switch the heating on and off at preset times.
The real beauty of a combi boiler is that even when the central heating is switched off, that you can turn on a tap and instantly get hot water.
Also modern combi boilers are very efficient even compared to boilers that were made ten years ago.
Indeed I replaced my boiler, which was around 15 years old with a modern condensing one, which is a staggering 90% more efficient.
Whilst you may consider a new boiler a big investment, a modern combi boiler can save you up to two hundred pounds per year in fuel costs.
So you can see that they can pay for themselves very rapidly, particularly with a boiler having a life span of fifteen to twenty years.
Indeed the inefficiency of old boilers recently prompted the government to introduce a boiler scrappage scheme, whereby you got a voucher for £400 towards the cost of a new boiler if you decided to upgrade to a new one.
Modern combi boilers now enable you to see the water temperature and pressure at a glance.
They also feature far less parts than older boilers have.
This means that overall they are far more reliable as there is less to wrong, and this also means that they are easier to service.
Overall I would say that if you do not own a combi boiler then you should consider switching to one as the fuel savings alone mean that they can pay for themselves in as little as five years.
Whilst the government boiler scrappage scheme has now stopped, they are still a very good investment.
