5 Truths About Quilting Patterns

Once a year the Southern California Association of Quilt Shop Owners promotes a quilt run that goes from Thursday through Sunday and lasts for 2 weekends.
The largest portion of my budget goes for quilting patterns.
I am constantly amazed by the beautiful quilting designs displayed on the walls.
I love the colors, the innovation and the flow of the design.
Having collected quite a library of patterns, I have learned a few truths.
1.
Quilting patterns are an opportunity to learn new ways of quilting.
I like to choose quilt patterns that teach me something new.
Whether the designer uses a new quilting toy or a technique used for centuries in another culture, trying new ways of quilting is always fun.
Sometimes, however I choose patterns that feel like comfort food for the hands.
An old favorite looks completely different with a new color or theme pattern and it feels good putting it together.
2.
They don't always work out We all know that the best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go awry.
Maybe the colors didn't quite work or the pattern in the fabric didn't flow correctly or whatever, stuff happens, move on.
3.
You don't have to make or finish all of those quilts.
When it comes to the point when you know the design is not going to work out, move on.
When you just can't seem to make yourself pick the project up one more time put it away and don't feel guilty.
You are not 12 and you don't have to finish all of your dinner.
4.
They can take over you entire bookshelf Between my ever growing stash and my ever growing library, it is a wonder that I have any room to actually sew.
Truth be told, sometimes I don't.
Then I just have to figure out what has to go and organize the rest.
To make use of any of the quilting patterns, I have to be able to find them.
5.
They can bring a great deal of pleasure just being there.
It is so satisfying to see the finished quilt all bound and quilted.
But looking through the books and quilting patterns can bring a great deal of joy as well.
I envision the projects that I would like to accomplish and who would love to receive one of them.
I imagine how different fabrics in my stash would look, or how that new line I saw would work in a particular pattern.
I see how I could tweak a design to make something completely new.
Mostly, I enjoy the art and creativity of the wonderful community of quilters and quilt designer.
