How to Cut Glass With a Diamond

    • 1). Place a clean cotton towel on a smooth, flat surface and lay your sheet of glass on top of the towel.

    • 2). Clean the glass with a commercial glass cleaner and a paper towel.

    • 3). Decide where you want your glass cut and lay your straight edge along this line. Hold the straight edge down firmly and roll the wheel of your glass cutter along the edge of your straight edge putting firm pressure on the cutter. You should hear a scratching, almost cracking sound as your glass cutter scratches the top of the glass along your line. The scratch must be from one edge of the glass all the way to the opposite edge. Remove the straight edge.

    • 4). Slide your scratched glass to the edge of your flat work area so that part of the glass hangs over the edge of the table with the scratched side up. Align the scratch with the table's straight edge. Grasp the hanging portion of the glass and snap down firmly so that the glass breaks neatly along the scratched line.

    • 5). Use your 150-grit sandpaper to smooth and slightly round the cut edges of the glass. This not only makes the glass safer to hold but it strengthens the glass as well.
