How to Prevent Plastic Auto Headlights From Getting Scratched & Cloudy
- 1). Wet sand the headlight using the 600-grit sandpaper. When the surface is smooth, continue sanding with the 800-grit, then 1,000-grit, and finally 1,200-grit sandpaper. Using incremental sandpaper grits clean the headlights without causing further surface damage.
- 2). Buff out the headlight using a light cutting compound/surface prep cleaner with the electric buffer on the lens after applying the cleaner. This clears the grit resulting from the sanding process and prepares the headlight for polishing.
- 3). Polish the headlight, using a plastic polish or an automotive clear-coat, by applying the polish and using the polishing rag to hand-buff it out over the lens. The headlight repair is complete when the headlight appears clean, clear and polished.
- 4). Monitor the condition of your headlights over time. Once the signs of cloudiness and scratches begin to reappear, follow the first three steps to prevent the condition from worsening.
