    • 1). Verify the Ventrilo server is running. If you're running a Ventrilo server on your computer, click "Start," "All Programs," "VentSrv" and "Ventrilo Server." Install Ventrilo server as a WIndows service that starts automatically with your computer by clicking "Start," "All Programs," "VentSrv," "Service" and "Install."

    • 2). Verify your Ventrilo server is configured properly by examining its "ventrilo_srv.ini" file. If you're running the Ventrilo server on your computer, click "Start," "All Programs," "VentSrv" and "Edit INI File."

    • 3). Verify the Ventrilo server's authentication is configured properly. Allow anyone to connect by having the line "Auth=0" in the configuration file, or require a password to connect by having the line "Auth=1" in the configuration file and typing a password after the "Password=" line.

    • 4). Save the Ventrilo server's configuration file by clicking "File" and "Save" if you changed the server's settings. Close any running servers and restart them after changing settings in the "ventrilo_srv.ini" file.

    • 5). Enable port 3784 for both the TCP and UDP protocols on your firewall, if one is running on your Ventrilo server's computer. Bear in mind that Windows XP and newer versions of Windows ship with a firewall running by default.

    • 6). Forward port 3784 for both the TCP and UDP protocols to your Ventrilo server's IP address if it's behind a router. See your router's documentation for more information on forwarding ports; all routers are different.

    • 7). Verify the IP address you gave the people is your Internet IP address if you're behind a router. IP addresses starting with "192.168.," "10." or "172.16." to "172.31." are private IP addresses on your local network. Find your Internet IP address and give it to people instead; see your router's documentation for more information.

    • 8). Verify the people connecting to your server have the correct information. If either you or they spelled the IP address or hostname, port or optional password incorrectly, Ventrilo can't connect.
