How to Test a PC Monitor

    • 1). Press the power button the monitor to ensure that the monitor is on. Computer monitors often have a power indicator light on the front that will illuminate when the monitor is turned on. If there is no change when pressing the power button, check the connection of the power cable into the rear of the monitor, as this cable is often removable and can loosen from time to time. Also, ensure that the power cable is completely plugged into the wall outlet or surge protector. If everything is in order and the power is still not working, try replacing the power cable. Computer monitors use a common, three-prong cable that is interchangeable with other devices. If you do not have another cable, power down your computer and try plugging your computer's power cable into the monitor to determine if the monitor's power cable is defective.

    • 2). Check that the VGA or DVI cable, depending on your configuration, is securely connected to both the monitor and the computer. Both VGA and DVI cables use screws that are connected to the connectors themselves to secure the connection. Ensure that the screws are tight, which will result in a secure connection. Laptop VGA ports often will not have screws to connect the cable to, so ensure that the cable is fully inserted into the VGA port. If the cable is securely connected, try connecting the monitor to the computer using a different cable to eliminate the possibility of a faulty cable.

    • 3). Connect a different monitor to the computer or connect the monitor to a different computer. If the replacement monitor functions correctly, then the problem lies within the original monitor. However if the new monitor does not properly function, then the problem is more than likely with the computer. Additionally, if the original monitor properly functions with another computer, than the original computer is more than likely the source of the problems. If it does not function on another computer, then the monitor itself is likely to blame.
