Painting the garage floor is an often overlooked aspect of home design. However, when it is finished, the garage takes on an entirely different look and engages everyone in the home to look at it differently. They are even inspired to treat the garage as an actual "room" of the home. Use epoxy paints that are self leveling, slip resistant and industrial grade to properly adhere to concrete. Epoxy paints also make cleaning easier and the color last longer. - Notice how garage floors in auto service centers and industrial garages typically boast a medium gray color. You can recreate that same sleek, industrial effect on the floor of your garage. Because the color is often used, it isn't difficult to find. Indicate how you will use the paint color to the sales person to ensure that it will adhere properly, and inquire about protective finishes that work well. You might also inquire at auto paint stores for suggestions on how to add longevity to the painted garage floor.
- Another choice is to paint the car floor to match the color of a vehicle. Visit your auto dealer, or go online to match the colors. You can do the job inexpensively by simply selecting colors from the "family" of colors that match the car. A burgundy car body is complemented with a basic red floor and so on.
- Choose a paint color that mirrors the base or primary color of the home's exterior to add a complementary effect when the garage door rises and a vehicle is driven inside. Get sample color swatches, or take a sample color along with you when you purchase the floor paint.
- Give a real NASCAR racecar look to the floor of your garage. A black and white checkerboard design does just that. It's easy and inexpensive to paint. Simply stripe off one-foot vertical lines, and then one-foot horizontal lines with painter's tape to form the squares. Paint the white squares first, followed by the black squares. The finished look adds character to the garage floor and is easily completed as a weekend project.
- If your garage also serves as a workspace for crafts and projects, you can make the floor a work of art inexpensively by using existing buckets of spare paint or small cans of discontinued paints. The benefit is, because the final effect will mimic a piece of abstract art, imperfections and dirt aren't easily noticed. You can even get the whole family engaged by giving everyone a brush and asking them to splatter paint onto the floor just as if it is a canvas. Apply a proper epoxy paint and protective sealant to the final results.
