How to Replace a Defrost Timer
- 1). Unplug the refrigerator.
- 2). Locate the defrost timer. The timer should have four metal terminals coming from the bottom of the unit. It is usually situated behind the refrigerator, in the refrigerator's control panel, the freezer compartment toward the front of the cabinet or behind a metal kickplate on the bottom of the refrigerator. Older Kenmore models may have it built into the icemaker.
- 3). Remove the defrost timer by taking off the kickplate (if there is one) and removing any screws attaching it to the refrigerator or freezer. Carefully pull the timer out from the wall of the unit so you can disconnect the wiring from the connectors. If removal is difficult, try wiggling the connectors back and forth to help loosen them and pull on them firmly.
- 4). Plug the wire connectors into the new defrost timer and replace the timer in the refrigerator.
- 5). Secure with screws, replace cover and plug in refrigerator.
