Directions for a Table Top Fountain

    Materials

    • If you go with a finished table top water fountain, merely add water according to the directions on the box, plug it in and you're set. If you decide to make it yourself, start by gathering a small submersible pump. These can found in aquarium, hardware, garden supply and fountain stores. Consider buying one with a water flow regulator and suction cup feet.

You'll also need about an 8-inch plastic tubing with a ½-inch inner diameter and 5/8-inch outer diameter; a water-proof bowl at least 2 inches deep and filler material. These could be stones, marbles, beads -- anything that strikes your fancy.

    Setting It Up

    • Fit the plastic tubing on the pump spout and cut to size so that it fits in your bowl. This is where the water is going to fountain from so ensure that the tube (when vertical) is not higher than the rim of the bowl, otherwise it'll be difficult to cover the plastic with the fillers. Attach the pump to the bottom of the bowl and make sure the suction cup feet are secure. Pour in tap water to cover the intake valve at least two inches. Plug the pump in to the electrical outlet and test it. Adjust how fast the water flows as necessary.

    Finishing Touches

    • Hide the pump with large rocks or another heavy, opaque material. Tape down the electrical cord going over the edge of the bowl along the bowl's surface so it's slightly more concealed. Consider adding a tall rock or leaf or another material in front of the cord to hide it both inside and outside the bowl.

Fill the rest of the bowl with stones, crystals, figures or shells, among others. These aesthetic add-ons also serve to hold the tubing up and conceal the pump. Suction out the excess water, turn on the pump and enjoy. Make sure to clean the table top fountain every three months by taking it apart and cleaning the pump of debris.
