Can You Tint a Front Windshield?
- Regions that receive the most amount of sun and glare generally have more lenient laws regarding the tint of the front windshield above the rearview mirror.
- Even in northern areas, the strip running right below the roof (known as the AS1 line) can have a tint, depending on the state. For example, Vermont allows tint above the AS1 line while New Jersey does not.
- Whatever rules govern the tint on a front windshield near you, the more practical concern is whether or not you can see out during all weather conditions.
- What's legal in your town or state may not be legal in other areas. It is up to law enforcement to decide whether to ticket you.
- The people with the best understanding of tinting laws are going to be local police who have to enforce the codes and the local aftermarket shops that install them. As a last resort, check with nearby law enforcement to make sure any changes are legal.
