Harman Kardon BDP1 - High Definition Resolution Loss Test Bar CU1

Shown on this last page is a close-up photo of the rotating bar that is a part of the High Definition Resolution Loss Test. As you will notice, the bar is exhibits some jaggedness. This represents below average 1080i to 1080p conversion by the Harman Kardon BDP1. However, keep in mind that almost all film-sourced Blu-ray Discs are mastered in 1080p. In these cases 1080i to 1080p conversion is not a factor as the majority of Blu-ray Disc players do not perform 1080i/1080p conversion on 1080p material.

However, some video-sourced high definition content, such as live concerts or similar content is often mastered in 1080i for Blu-ray and thus, the player would have to perform a 1080i to 1080p conversion before sending out of the player in 1080p. For these cases, the results of this test would factor into a Blu-ray Disc player's performance.

Final Take:

The BDP1 passed a majority of the tests on the Silicon Optix HQV Benchmark DVD, which measures DVD video performance with regards to video processing and upscaling.

The test results revealed that the BDP1 does good to very good with progressive scan (3:2 pulldown), jaggie elimination, detail, motion adaptive processing, and moire pattern detection and elimination.

However, on other tests (not shown in this gallery), the BDP1 did not do well with video noise reduction and some video/film field/frame cadences, such as some that are used in video production and animation such as 2:2:2:4, 2:3:3:2, 3:2:3:2:2, 5:5, 6:4, and 8:7. In addition, the BDP1 also exhibited a slight oversaturation with the Blue and Orange/Red part of the color spectrum.

Touching on the audio side, the BDP1 offers complete onboard audio decoding, but also provides undecoded bitstream output for compatible home theater receivers. The BDP1 delivered excellent audio performance on both Blu-ray and DVD soundtracks, and also from audio-only CDs. I noticed no audio artifacts that could be attributed to the BDP1.

On the other hand, Harman Kardon does not include a 5.1/7.1 channel analog audio output option for connection of the BDP1 to home theater receivers that do not have audio access via HDMI.

Taking all into consideration, I give the Harman Kardon BDP1 a 3.5 out of 5 Star Rating.
