How to Decorate a Black Wall With White Accents
- 1). Hang a gallery of black-and-white photographs and artwork in white ceramic or wooden frames on the wall. Experiment with different picture arrangements, such as hanging a large photo that's flanked by two smaller photos, or placing a group of evenly sized pictures closely together in a group of four or nine to make a larger picture from the smaller ones. Additionally, look for frames that have some adornment such as a curlycue design or that are round or oval instead of square. This will provide extra visual contrast.
- 2). Reflect some of the room's light by hanging mirrors in white frames around the room. These decorative accessories can be part of the wall gallery or can provide small pockets of visual interest around the room. Mirrors open up a space and provide more light by reflecting light from sources such as lamps as well as outdoor light, a definite plus in a black room.
- 3). Choose one wall on which to hang black and white wallpaper. This choice offers you some nice visual contrast; you don't even have to paper the whole wall to get the visual effect. Hang paper on the bottom half of the wall or hang a black-and- white border. Some interesting patterns to experiment with include stripes, paisley or small black-and-white pastoral scenes.
- 4). Play up a fireplace made from white stone. The black paint on the walls will provide a dramatic contrast to this natural architectural feature. You can enhance this area even further by hanging sconces with clear glass lamps that are filled with white candles above the mantel. Another interesting choice for the fireplace is to buy an elaborate candelabra and place it in the fireplace opening after painting the inside of the fireplace with black paint. (Do this only if you no longer burn wood in the fireplace.) Fill it with white candles of various shapes and sizes.
- 5). Adorn the windows with white curtains and valances. Curtains function like a frame does for a picture. Set against the backdrop of a black wall, the white curtains will provide a visual pop. You can experiment with white on white, using different textures for the curtains and valances or go for the black-and-white look by featuring white curtains and a black valance or vice versa.
