How to Install a Dimmer & Light Switch for a Ceiling Fan
- 1). Turn on the fan and set the pull chains for the highest speed setting. Turn the fan off at the wall switch. Turn off the circuit breaker for the fan. Remove the switch cover plate and use the no-contact voltage tester to make sure the power is off. Put the probe close to the black wire inside the switch box.
- 2). Remove the screws holding the switch in the electrical box and gently pull the switch out. Remove the two black wires from the switch terminals with a screwdriver. Clip the bent wire ends off with the wire stripper cutter and strip away 3/4-inch of insulation.
- 3). Connect each black wire on the fan speed controller to a wire from the old switch. Twist the bare ends together and cap with a wire nut. Connect the green ground wire to the bare ground wires in the box and cap them with a wire nut.
- 4). Fold the wires behind the fan speed controller as you push it into the electrical box. Secure the controller to the box with the supplied screws or use the screws that held the switch in place. Install the cover plate to complete the installation.
- 5). Turn on the circuit breaker and test the new fan controller by trying various speeds. Do not try to operate the fan's pull chains as this may damage the speed controller or fan or cause them to overheat.
