How to Install VCT Over Vinyl
- 1). Clean off the vinyl surface where you will be installing the VCT. Sweep all dust and debris away from the area with a broom and dust pan. Wipe down the entire surface with a clean rag. Dampen the rag and add soap, if necessary, to scrub out any grease and oil.
- 2). Spread out the VCT around the room in your desired pattern. Mark the pieces along the edge that will need to be cut. Score along the mark with a utility knife and cut the first piece to size. Score it multiple times until it snaps in two, and repeat the process for all of the other pieces that need to be cut.
- 3). Open a bucket of vinyl flooring adhesive and spread it out, beginning in any corner of the room. Cover the entire vinyl surface with an even layer 1/8-inch thick, using a notched trowel. Work in small sections, using a few tiles at a time. Set the VCT onto the adhesive. Run your hands over the entire surface of the tile so it can adhere to the adhesive.
- 4). Spread out the adhesive over another section and install the VCT in the same manner. Continue around the entire room, applying adhesive and then adding the tile on top until the vinyl surface is covered with VCT.
- 5). Inspect the area and make sure there is no adhesive sticking up or on top of the tiles. Wipe away any excess adhesive with a clean cloth.
