    • 1). Cut the power to the circuit where you will be working.

    • 2). Remove the light fixture. This usually involves unscrewing a supporting nut at the base of the fixture and removing a threaded brass tube attached to a junction box from which the light hung. If the fixture's junction box and bracing is capable of supporting the weight of the fan, you can leave it in place. Otherwise, you will have to remove this hardware as well. Skip to Step 5 if you will not be replacing the hardware.

    • 3). Insert the fan's support bar through the hole. Fasten the brace bar to the joists using wood screws.

    • 4). Pull the existing wires through the junction box and attach the box to the support bar.

    • 5). Attach the power supply wires to the fan following the manufacturer's instructions. The black wire carries power to the fan, the white wire is the neutral wire and the bare or green wire is the ground wire. If the fan also includes a light kit, there may be a second black or a red wire. This wire is also connected to the power supply wire.

    • 6). Attach the fan to the bracket and finish the installation according to the manufacturer's instructions.
