    • 1). Smooth the wooden board you want to use by rubbing the entire surface and edges with sandpaper. Rub the board with the sandpaper using circular motions.

    • 2). Wipe off any saw dust using a damp cloth.

    • 3). Write out the wording for your sign using a carpenter's pencil. A carpenter's pencil will be large and durable enough to be used on the wood without breaking.

    • 4). Trace over the wooden wording with a permanent marker, which will enable you to see the wording as you paint over it.

    • 5). Paint over the wording using an outdoor, waterproof paint. Select bright colors that will be seen easily from a distance so that it will capture more attention. Allow the paint to dry completely before displaying the board sign.
