How to Tile a Wall Corner

    • 1). Measure your working area and create a layout for your tile pattern. Ideally, your layout should be designed so that your cut tiles fall along the corners; and the cut tiles should be about 1/2 the width of an uncut piece of tile. Include the 1/8-inch grout joints between each piece of tile in your measurements. Mark your center line with a chalk line.

    • 2). Mix your thin-set mortar and set the tile. Spread the appropriate amount of mortar using your notch trowel. Start at your center line and work your way to the wall. Use nylon spacers to leave consistent-sized joints between each tile. When you get to the corner, leave a slight gap, about 1/8 inch, between the cut edge of the tile and the wall.

    • 3). Set tile on the adjacent wall. When you get to the corner, use a nylon spacer to leave a consistent gap between the two corner tiles.

    • 4). Run a bead of silicon grout caulk down the corner seam, instead of traditional grout. A regular grout does not have enough flexibility to work effectively in a corner seam; it will crack out over time. A silicon-based grout caulk will resemble the look of grout with the flexibility to fill the corner seam.

    • 5). Grout the rest of the tile with a matching grout. Use a grout float to spread the grout and work it down into the joints between the tiles. Use a wet sponge to remove the excess grout and to smooth the grout in between the tile joints. You will likely need to clean with the sponge two or three times before the tile surface is completely clean and free of grout residue.
