How to Troubleshoot a Central Air Conditioner & Heat Pump
- 1). Clean your central air conditioner or heat pump if it turns on but is not providing the correct amount of cool or warm air. Debris such as leaves and dirt can make its way into the machine and disrupt performance. Using a sponge and a bucket of cool water, apply water to the air flow grates that are located on the top and sometimes on the sides of the unit. Repeat this process until the grates are no longer obstructed. Clean air grates provide the proper amount of air to the unit, which helps to ensure proper operation.
- 2). Check the main electrical panel of your house for a blown fuse or tripped circuit if your heating and cooling unit will not turn on.
- 3). Call your local HVAC repairman if your unit is making squealing or grinding noises. This is most likely due to bad bearings or a slipped belt in the motor of your unit.
