3 person tents are regularly used for mountaineering because they are light enough to be carried in a rucksack.
They are quick to set-up and although with a relatively smaller space, they are extremely functional.
Focusing on the smaller 3-man tents, 3 types and shapes of tents are discussed below.
Ridge Tent This type of tent has a ridge at the top and steeply sloping sides similar to a ridged roof.
They are usually made of lightweight material like nylon so this is ideal for backpacking as they take up little space when folded.
They are also easy to put up because of the simple structure.
Ridge tents are available for one to three persons.
Hoop Tent This type has no ridge pole therefore it takes up lesser space, although it is less rigid.
This type offers less resistance to wind and provides better access area to get in and get out of.
Hoop tents are usually small and lightweight tent ideal for expedition work and camping.
It can accommodate one to three people.
Dome Tent This is perhaps the most popular choice.
It uses three to four intersecting hoops and the material forms a dome-shaped sleeping area.
These are available in a wide variety of sizes ranging from 2-person lightweight tents to 9-person large dome tents.
One of the most popular is the 3 man dome tent.
Remember that you should subtract one person from the advertised or recommended number of people to fit a certain tent.
Tents advertised for one person are seldom big enough for a single individual.
Therefore, two-person tents can fit one person comfortably while a 3 man tent can accommodate two people.
Three person tents are spacious enough for two people and some of their things.
It can also fit three persons but the gear usually has to be placed outside.
Generally, tents larger than 3-man are tents for family camping or car camping.
4+ person tents can usually accommodate 3 to 6 persons depending on actual size.
