    • 1). Tie a piece of the nylon cord between two solid objects. Cut the cord to the needed length with the knife. Melt the edges of the cut with the lighter to prevent the nylon from fraying. Determine the angle of the sun, and the location that will provide the most shade.

    • 2). Toss the tarp up and over the tied line; it should be equidistant to both sides of the line. Pull the sides of the tarp out from the line, leaving it balanced on the cord.

    • 3). Place rocks or heavy objects on the corners of the tarp where it makes contact with the ground; this will help support the shade-tent walls. As the sun shifts in the sky, adjust the tarp by removing the weights. Maneuver the tarp to different positions, and replace the weights as needed.

    • 4). Plant two telescoping poles in the sand or ground if there are no supports in the area. Extend the poles halfway up their extensions. Place the other two poles several feet in front of the back poles . Extend them to their full height.

    • 5). Drape the tarp over the four poles, making a lean-to style structure. Tie the corners with cord lengths, and use rocks or heavy objects to tie the opposite ends. Place the lined weights so the tarp is tight and supported. Move the tarp-tent as the sun shifts in the sky.
