How to Install Agitator Dogs in a Whirlpool Washer
- 1). Unplug the Whirlpool washer from the electrical wall outlet. Open the lid of the washer so that you can access the agitator.
- 2). Remove the cap from the top of the agitator. Many of the washers have a liquid fabric softener dispenser that will pop off by lifting it with your hands. Other Whirlpool washers have a cap that must be removed by sliding the blade of a flathead screwdriver into a slot between the cap and the agitator shaft. Twist the screwdriver handle after inserting the blade into the slot and pop the cap off the agitator.
- 3). Grab the handle of the inner debris cap inside the agitator and pull it up to remove it from the agitator. You may have to twist the cap left and right as you are lifting it from the agitator. A rubber o-ring attaches to the outside rim of the debris cap. If the o-ring slips off the cap during removal, you must slide it back over the cap edge prior to re-installing the debris cap.
- 4). Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove the agitator bolt from the inside of the agitator. The agitator bolt secures the agitator to the tub. Lift the bolt out of the agitator. Grab the top half of the agitator and pull it straight up to remove it from the bottom half of the agitator.
- 5). Turn the top half of the agitator upside down and pull out the old cam and agitator dogs. The cam is a white round piece and the dogs look like small plastic ears. The dogs fit into slots on the cam. Take the cam and agitator dogs with you to an appliance repair store to purchase a replacement kit.
- 6). Set the agitator dogs into the slots on the cam. Insert the assembled cam with agitator dogs into the top half of the agitator. The agitator dog side of the cam should be facing the inside of the agitator and the smooth side of the cam facing out.
- 7). Set the top half of the agitator onto the bottom half of the agitator. Set the agitator bolt back inside the center of the agitator and tighten it down with the socket wrench.
- 8). Place the debris cap with the o-ring installed back inside the center of the agitator until it locks into place. Reattach the agitator cap to the top of the agitator. Close the washer lid and plug the washer back into the wall outlet.
