How to Check/Refill the Battery Electrolyte in a Geo Tracker

    • 1). Park the Tracker and turn the engine off. Pull the hood release handle located inside the vehicle under the instrument panel. Push the hood latch located under the hood.

    • 2). Open the hood and find the battery. It's located on the driver's side of the Geo Tracker.

    • 3). Determine whether you have a maintenance-free battery or a low-maintenance battery, if you're not sure which kind is in your Tracker. They're easy to tell apart because while the maintenance-free battery is sealed, the low-maintenance battery contains six individual cells with vent caps.

    • 4). Check the maintenance-free battery by looking at the built-in eye of its hydrometer. If the eye is green, your battery is well-charged with plenty of fluid. A black eye indicates low charge and fluid. If the reading is yellow, the charge and fluid are low enough that you should replace your battery.

    • 5). Remove all six vent caps to check the battery electrolyte levels on the low-maintenance battery. You'll find an indicator line on the side of each of the six cells that shows you where the fluid level should be. Check each cell individually. If the fluid isn't up to the indicator line, add distilled water to that cell.
