How to Repair a Heating Element in a Dryer
- 1). Order a new heating element coil online. You'll need to know your dryer's make and model number. Search using the make, model and the words "electric dryer," "heating element'' and "replacement'' and you'll find plenty. They generally cost less than $50.
- 2). Unplug your dryer and pull it away from the wall. Remove the vent hose by using your screwdriver to loosen the metal clamp belt that holds it there.
- 3). Working from the back of the dryer, use your screwdriver to remove the flat access panel. Save all the screws and take note of where they go. (Note: There are a few models that require you to access the system from the top rather than the back. Consult your owner's manual.)
- 4). After the panel is off, locate the rectangular metal box that holds the heating element, which is a metal coil strung around the surface of a plate. Depending on the model, you can access the heating element inside by either removing the box completely (by unscrewing the screws that attach it), or opening it at one end and sliding the heating element out. Either way, the element will be attached to wires that will pop off by gently prying them with the flathead bit of your universal screwdriver, and by a few mounting screws (the number of screws varies between models). Make a note of where everything goes.
- 5). Place or slide the new heating element into the box in the same fashion as the old one came out. Plug the wires back onto their clips on the heating element, and put the mounting screws back in their holes. Put the access plate back onto the rear of the dryer, securing it with the same screws you removed earlier, in the same holes. Slide the vent hose into place. Tighten the metal hose clamp around it, using the flathead bit of your universal screwdriver to secure it in place. Plug the dryer back in. Test the heat.
