List of Hidden Symbols on a Keyboard
- The Extended ASCII Chart contains letters and symbols that can be entered into any text box or word processor by typing in the correct ALT code. These symbols include letters specific to many Western European languages as well as commonly used symbols such as the copyright sign and the degree sign. This table of characters is also referred to as "Latin-1 Supplemental" in Microsoft Word.
- These character tables contain every known letter and symbol from every language in the world that uses the Latin alphabet or a modified form of it. These are also accessible within Microsoft Word and other word processors by inserting a symbol. The character tables include characters from Eastern European languages and other more obscure languages from around the world. Only Unicode fonts such as "Arial" or "Times New Roman" tend to contain these symbols.
- Unicode fonts contain symbols from many of the world's writing systems. These can be viewed within Microsoft Word by inserting a symbol and choosing the language from the "Subset" drop-down box. The characters tables include the alphabets for languages such as Russian, Arabic, Georgian, Armenian and more. Symbols from complex logographic scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean are also provided.
- In some fonts, such as the most commonly used Unicode fonts like Arial and Times New Roman, there are many other hidden symbols. These include mathematical symbols, dingbats, arrows and shapes.
