Do you smoke weed? Do you smoke marijuana regularly? Are you among the many who are out petitioning for the legalization of said herb?

If any drug were to be the next to be put out there, weed is probably the more docile of any, but maybe there are a few good reasons that mary jane has yet to be placed on the market for public consumption.

Many feel alcoholics are more of a danger to society than potheads, or that cigarettes are worse for you than marijuana, and these factors may have a small amount of truth to them.

But...

Are the physical effects of marijuana really less dangerous in comparison to alcohol or cigarettes?

Some things to bear in mind:

Pot has some pretty severe effects on the heart. Withing moments of taking that first toke, the heart rate begins to go up by as much as 20 to 50 beats per minute. When considering that a usual resting heartbeat is 60-70 beats per minute, this is a pretty drastic leap. Along with increased pulse, blood pressure drops. With these two factors, probabilities of a heart attack are four times higher.

Many suppose that marijuana has no harmful effects on the lungs because most pot smokers use a lot less weed than people smoke tobacco. This is only partially true. Weed contains much more carcinogens than tobacco, and because weed smokers inhale more deeply and hold the smoke in their lungs for a longer time period, their lungs are exposed to these carcinogens for longer.

Another effect of cannabis on your health to consider would be that THC weakens the body's level of immunity and impairs its ability to keep at bay sickness and disease. This can cause a wide variety of issues.

Mental health is not something that is considered often as being influenced by weed, but it is something serious to bear in mind. Not only does long term cannabis use have permanent negative effects on brain function, including perception, problem solving, and motor function, chronic weed use has been associated with increased vulnerability in developing anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia.

If the actual physical consequences of smoking bud don't bother you, then dig deep into your memory. Remember that one kid's dad who gave you your first joint? Yeah, he's still sitting on that couch in search of his lighter and the box of cookies he finished eating four hours ago. This may be you.

But seriously, while the long-standing negative effects of smoking weed is probably not as worse and the many other drugs you could be out doing, just consider that, like anything else, there are negative effects on your overall health, and anything that may possibly kill you quicker may be something worth stopping.
