How Do I Adjust the Back Brake on a Polaris 500 Xplorer?
- 1). Shift into neutral and place blocks or something heavy behind the front wheels to keep the Polaris 500 Xplorer from rolling.
- 2). Use a jack to raise up the rear axle.
- 3). Remove the bolts securing the guard around the drive chain. Remove the guard.
- 4). Locate the rear brake caliper that was exposed by removing the drive chain guard. It will have a lock nut at the base and an adjustment bolt protruding from the lock nut.
- 5). Loosen the lock nut on the rear brake caliper.
- 6). Rotate the rear wheels.
- 7). Tighten the adjustment bolt on the rear brake caliper until it is difficult to rotate the rear wheels.
- 8). Turn the rear wheels while slowly turning the adjustment bolt on the rear caliper counterclockwise.
- 9). Ask a friend to press the brake handle in to the midway point.

Stop turning the adjustment bolt on the rear caliper once the pedal is at the midway point. The point is to have the rear wheel become difficult to turn when the pedal is depressed to the midway point. - 11
Adjust the adjustment bolt on the rear caliper until the brakes are applied at the desired strength. - 12
Tighten the lock nut on the rear caliper. - 13
Reattach the guard protecting the drive chain. - 14
Lower the vehicle and remove the blocks.
