Pimples - To Pop or Not to Pop - That is the Question
We have all had them, bulging whiteheads so big they are screaming to be squeezed.
Will squeezing it cause more damage? Will it cause scarring? There are ways to protect your skin from overzealously attacking acne.
Popping pimples can in fact cause your acne to worsen, spread, or may cause scarring.
This is usually because we begin picking at it as soon as we notice it.
Often our hands are unclean which transfers dirt to your skin which can further clog your pores.
If the zit is not ready to pop yet, squeezing it may push the bacterium that causes acne further into the skin.
This can cause an even larger infection.
If you begin to pick at a zit, and it does not pop after gentle squeezing, leave it alone.
The white stuff should be visible from the outer layer of skin.
If it is not, you will only make the zit more noticeable, and redder.
If you have this type of pimple hold a warm wash rag with a tiny bit of salt on the spot of a period of about 10 minutes in the morning and in the evening.
This can help dry out the zit, or it can help bring it to the surface so it can be squeezed.
If your pimple is ready for popping, thoroughly wash both your hands and face to remove any dirt or germs.
If you are wearing makeup, make sure it is completely removed.
Sterilize a small needle over a match or lighter.
This will kill any germs on the needle.
You will also need some toilet paper and hydrogen peroxide.
With your face clean, and the needle disinfected, gently prick the top of the pimple with the needle.
Do not push the needle into the skin; you do not want to cause a permanent scar.
You are simply creating a tiny opening to make room for the exiting puss.
Wrap the toilet paper around your two index fingers and very gently squeeze on the side of the zit.
Stop squeezing once the white stuff stops, especially once you see blood or clear liquids.
Apply hydrogen peroxide to the area.
This will help disinfect the zit, and will remove any bacteria that may have been squeezed onto your skin.
Follow this by washing your face again, and then apply a non-comedogenic (meaning will not clog pores) lotion to replace any lost moisture in the skin.
Acne is best left alone.
Eventually it will go away on its own.
Picking at it can cause further irritation, may cause it to spread, or may cause scarring.
Following the above advice to pop a pimple will help prevent any of these negatives from occurring.
