How to Draw a Sombrero

    • 1). Draw an upside-down U for the crown of the sombrero. While some sombreros are curved on top, others taper slightly to a narrowed tip.

    • 2). Add shading and/or arches to give your sombrero crown some roundness, depth and definition. To add shading, choose one side of the upside-down U and draw slightly curved, horizontal lines close together along the side. Make the lines slightly longer along the bottom, growing smaller as you reach the top of the crown. Also, you can add two smaller upside-down U's (arches) to the bottom of the crown, almost like a capital letter M. This will add shape to the sombrero's crown.

    • 3). Draw a roughly circular (slightly oval) shape around the crown. This is the brim of your sombrero. Change the look of the hat by making the brim either round or flat. A flat brim makes it appear as if the viewer is looking at it straight on. The wider and rounder the brim, the more the view seems to be from above.

    • 4). Add another edge to the rim for thickness. This will take a little artistic eye. In some places (mostly along the front rim) add another parallel curved line to give the rim depth. To this, add shading as you did for the crown.

    • 5). Add decorations to the top of the brim. Many sombreros have a flower-like decoration around the crown. Others may have stitching reminiscent of fireworks and star-bursts. Of course, your sombrero can also be plain, like those worn for working under the sun. You can also add decorative trim along the edge of the sombrero.
